One possibility regarding the labor issue...
UDC offers technical training programs. There may also be HS level vocational training (if not, the need is there!) Internship partnerships could be created that would offset some of the labor costs while providing excellent job training skills.

Amen brother!

Great stuff.

It comes as no surprise that while there's trillions of dollars for the military and Wall Street investment banks, school lunch budgets are gutted. This "trading" of commodities should be stopped. As long as schools are like crack dealers treating kids as customers to make a buck I guess this will continue.

Tricia, great reporting. The devil is always in the details. And these messages are important when they go directly to kids. Witness the gross juxtaposition between the fresh-veggie signage in the "Kid's Stop Cafe" at H.D. Cooke and the food that's actually being served. Do adults really think kids don't know the difference? That said, Michelle Obama is still the best thing the healthy school food movement has going. Hang on for the ride.

I understand your interest in cheering Michelle Obama's efforts to promote healthy eating for kids, but I'm not sure I'd agree that she has done the best job she could from what I've seen so far. Did you see my posting on the concession menu at last year's kids' health-themed White House Easter Egg Roll? What a great opportunity to provide delicious and healthy snacks for kids and parents! Instead my starving baby could choose from Skittles, Otis Spunkmeyer muffins, or a lower-quality-than-McDonald's hamburger. Check it out: http://drinkofwater.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/masher-goes-to-the-white-house/
