We are engaging the concerns of a hungry planet--slowly--right here in our kitchen garden in the District of Columbia, about a mile from the White House.
What's in your turkey? We killed and butchered more than 80 birds on the farm of Mike and Michelle Klein in Prince George's County. Thankfully, Michelle did the gutting. Unfortunately, Mike bought his turkey chicks earlier than usual and they did not stop growing. Our prize for helping was a carcass that weighed nearly 40 pounds. It barely fit in the oven. Here, Mike is subjecting a slaughtered bird to the "magic fingers," a machine with a nubby, rotating barrel that removes most of the feathers. © 2009 The Slow Cook — Design by Keri Marion

Yes, it was so beautiful. Now I’m dying to figure out whether the front yard garden we’ve always admired is yours. But I guess you may not want to give out your address. In any case, I’ve very much enjoyed your series on HD Cooke (i’m a parent of a toddler in Col Hts), and I enjoyed the Kojo show as well. Thanks for your work on this!
Gosh that looks cold! If that happened here we’d all stay at home and the country would grind to a halt (again!).
Grey and drippy here in Suffolk (UK) thinking it’s time I got sowing…

(thought I try a comment Ed, just to prove I’m all connected again)
Nice photos, but when you wake up tomorrow that’s going to look like nothing.
CB, you wouldn’t be able to see the garden now, but it probably is.
Celia, now we have a blizzard.
Drew, I’m not sure there will be any “waking up” tomorrow. We might be shoveling all night at this rate.
