Planting sunflower seeds
Daughter is 10 now, an age when kids typically begin to approach things with a more mature attitude. For a while, I thought she would never be interested in working in the garden, but now she gladly agrees to help with the spring chores.
Here she is planting sunflower seeds. She came up with her own method. After I showed her how I wanted to space the seeds, she walked the entire row, laying the seeds on the soil surface in the proper position.
“Why are you doing that?” I asked.
“I’ll come back and push them under,” she explained.
Genius. Don’t ever think kids aren’t capable of solving problems in their own way.

We are engaging the concerns of a hungry planet--slowly--right here in our kitchen garden in the District of Columbia, about a mile from the White House.

Ed, I was hoping that your daughter was more “into” helping this year. I guess that shows I’ve been reading your posts for some time now.
She will have so many precious memories and appreciation of real food as she continues to grow up – what a lucky girl!

Diana, thanks for inquiring about our daughter. She’s growing up. Who knows, she might even become a gardener.
