I used to work in Sodexo's supply management division and 14% is not out of line and I'm certain this exact same situation is happening at school districts run by Sodexo across the country

Rebates are a standard practice in supply management divisions in every sector, not just food & beverage. Chartwells cited 5% rebate is also pretty standard, I would be surprised if it was more than that, and am surprised at the 14% they found at Sodexo. Some supplier is getting the shaft. Didn't know that federal law requires the disclosure of rebates, most private sector operations do not require their suppliers to disclose rebates. Again, its pretty standard practice and no one really thinks twice about it.

Public funds for school meals programs are inadequate and are currently being debated in Congress. Why isn't Congress investigating the practice of outsourcing of school food to private, for-profit entities? The Institute of Medicine and other government agencies have stated that selling junk food in schools is contributing to the poor health of America's kids. Companies like Sodexho make billions peddling highly processed artificially flavored drek, and the New York case is just the tip of the iceburg. I wonder how much money the public could reclaim for better quality food for our kids?

Tip of the iceberg... I bet this is going on in smaller districts on a smaller scale. Thanks to the Carciero brothers for doing the right thing.

Interesting post. Yeah, "No wonder the schools are often served brand-name products of dubious nutritional value."
