Don't believe everything you hear about meat
I’m not a scientist or a statistician, but I was skeptical when Dean Ornish, who’s been pushing his low-fat diets for years, and now poses as medical editor for the Huffington Post, wrote that a recent long-term study confirmed that people who ate a high-protein, low-carb diet tended to die sooner than those who focused more on fruits and vegetables.
Sure enough, Denise Minger, who does know a thing or two about the science (or lack of it) behind these kinds of studies, took a close look and determined that Ornish (and others in the popular media) had gotten it wrong. She writes a very long dissection of the study at her Raw Food SOS blog.
For another good analysis, as well as some background on Ornish, read Jimmy Moore’s Livin’ la Vida Low-Carb blog post. Moore obviously is an Atkins and Gary Taubes partisan, but his pieces are well-sourced and balanced. If you have any interest in knowing where the current science really is on protein-fat-carbs and health, this is a good place to start. Be prepared to do a lot of reading.

We are engaging the concerns of a hungry planet--slowly--right here in our kitchen garden in the District of Columbia, about a mile from the White House.
