Dancing round the May pole

Dancing round the May pole

When was the last time you saw kids celebrating spring around a May pole? Not in this part of the country, not that I can remember. But that was part of the celebrations at my daughter’s elementary school yesterday here in the District of Columbia. It was supposed to have happened last month, but was postponed because of the heat!

The school devoted a whole day to this, with performances by every grade, including kids in pre-school hopping and singing and acting like bunny rabbits where the playground had been turned into a giant stage. There was an extremely high cuteness factor. A volunteer DJ handled the music end, and for once the sound system seemed to work really well. Before the lunch break, the whole school gathered to dance the macarena. We have a lot of ethnic diversity in our school.

Daughter was involved several ways, playing with the school band and singing in the chorus. Unfortunately, I missed that part. Who knew this was going to start first thing in the morning? But I did catch the fourth grade performance, which involved this big, round piece of colorful fabric–like a parachute–that the kids spin in a circle, wave up and down, and eventually turn into a billowy igloo under which they disappear at the end of the act.

Meanwhile, one of the teachers was flipping burgers and roasting hot dogs for school lunch. The menu was totally decadent, including sodas, chips, cotton candy, popcorn, snow cones–a very carnival-like atmosphere. The kids had to purchase tickets for the food items, with sodas 50 cents and burgers $1.
