Customs house near the old port

The port in Barcelona dates to roman days. Now its more likely to be loading or unloading shipping containers, or cruise ships bound for destinations all over the globe. It was far to walk down the Ramblas from our hotel in the Gothic quarter. What’s billed as the world’s largest floating gangplank takes you from the water’s edge to a giant mall with shops, restaurants and movie theaters. Here’s a look.

They did a nice job with the grilled squid

They say you can eat tapas fairly cheaply in Barcelona if you stay away from the seafood. Guess what? Seafood is mainly what I wanted to eat while in Barcelona. I could have lived off fresh anchovies and grilled squid, like these in the photo. While circling the giant mall, we decided to take lunch at a touristy bistro with a view of the port. No complaints about the food. Everything we ate was exquisite. The squirt-bottle mayo on the patatas bravas may have been a little over the top.
