Goodbye, Blueberries

Even a small plant is load with berries
The end of blueberry season is nigh in Upstate New York. But we’ve had our fill from the 12 plants installed by the previous owners of our farm property. The bushes, planted strategically just outside the kitchen door, are still quite small but they produced plenty of berries–close to four pounds, I’d guess.
I like them for an easy breakfast, piled on top of a bowl of home-made yogurt. They’re great for pies, of course. Back in D.C., we’d make a pilgrimage each year to a local orchard where we’d pick 14 pounds or more and freeze them. The process is easy. After cleaning the berries, you just spread them out flat on a ceramic plate or baking sheet that fits in your freezer. When one batch is frozen, just dump the berries in a plastic freezer bag for long-term storage and start the next batch.
We made pies and smoothies all year long.
The best thing in the world may be a perennial plant that keeps producing food with almost no maintenance. As far as that goes, blueberries are at the top of my list. We will miss them until next year.
