Pardon Our Dust

Summer in November seems like the perfect time to build a new goat shelter. We keep thinking winter will be here any minute, so we want a place where our goats can get out of the weather.
During the cold months, the goats live separately from the other animals and now that we have more than two of them, they no longer fit in the little goat shed that came with the property when we bought it. We tried giving them access to the larger tool shed that stands in the same area but the goats quickly learned to knock the lids off the metal trash cans where we store our feed.
Things were starting to get complicated and it was time to decide whether to spend a bunch of money on a real solution or get rid of the goats. (My wife, who originally voted against goats on the farm, now claims them as her favorites of all the livestock. Go figure.)
Now that two goats have turned into nine, we definitely need a bigger structure. So we hired our friend Luke who arrived yesterday with his partner to start framing a three-sided structure a lot like the one we had built in our main paddock, only smaller.
This one is 12 feet wide, 24 feet long and eight feet tall. It faces south to protect the animals from the prevailing weather and even the occasional nor’easter. They used a backhoe to dig holes for the main posts. A truck arrived with the lumber right on schedule and carpentry began. I suspect it won’t be long before we start to see a roof.
