Spring Album

The tomatoes, raised from seed, went into the ground yesterday, surrounded by a thick mulch of shredded straw in big cages. We picked a resistant variety of Mortgage Lifter this year from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.
The broccoli also found a home outside. We'll be trying to grow more broccoli than ever this year. But spring often gets hot early here in the District of Columbia. We've got our fingers crossed.
This is spinach was planted in December. Just when it is starting to strut its stuff, it shows signs of bolting.
The rhubarb also is trying hard to reproduce. We will cut these seed stems to redirect energy back into the leaves and roots. This is year three for these plants, so we will be making rhubarb sauce.
The tat soi appears to be happy....
....fava beans, too.
We have lots of lettuce in many different varieties.
French Breakfast radish is our favorite. Looks like we'll be eating some soon. Maybe even for breakfast.
