Disappearing from these U.S. shores

Here’s a sure sign of the times: the last sardine cannery in the United States, located in Prospect Harbor, ME, is closing.

National Public Radio had a wonderful report on these sad tidings, including an interview with a woman in her 70s–Lela Anderson–who’s been working in the plant since she was a teenager.

Stinson Seafood, at one time one of hundreds of such canneries in Maine, is set to close this week after more than 100 years of operation. Federal limits on the sardine catch are cited as the main factor in the demise. But you might as well say it: there just aren’t enough fish in the sea any more. But weren’t sardines supposed to be one of those limitless, sustainable fish.

I know I love ’em for those omega-3 fats.
