The coveted Titanium spork

The coveted "Titanium spork"

Okay, I normally don’t chase these blog awards. But this one is for a good cause: recognizing coverage of the school food issue. Do you like the way I’ve been covering school food? It’s not exactly how I intended to spend my time when I decided to spend a week in the kitchen at my daughter’s elementary school here in the District of Columbia, thinking they were cooking food from scratch.

Just a few short months later, we’ve learned quite a lot about what schools are feeding our kids, and in most cases it’s not very good at all. In fact, the adults responsible for school meal programs have plenty to answer for. This is hardly about providing food for hungry kids anymore, but rather malnourishing an entire generation.

While I’ve been reporting on these issues, a teacher in Illinois has grabbed a ton of attention by vowing to eat the food in her school cafeteria for a year and blog about it. I was surprised to see that I’d been nominated on her site this month for a “Titanium Spork” award. The Slow Cook currently is in fifth place, behind Jamie Oliver, Michele Obama and a couple of others. As long as I’m in the running, I’m hoping that my readers will rally to the cause and cast a vote in support of the work that goes into uncovering what’s really going on in school food service.

You can do so here.
