Peas in Bloom

The radishes are a bust (too much heat), but it looks like our snap peas will be arriving soon, right on schedule. Pea blossoms are a reassuring sight, a sign that the lean times of winter will indeed give way to more food from the garden.
The pea plants are now 42 inches tall. It appears that our system for supporting them–metal rebar and string–is working. We’ve used two lengths of string fastened horizontally between the rebar posts to capture the pea plants and hold them erect. Some commercial tomato growers use a very similar system for staking up tomato plants. The pea plants also have tendrils that grab the string–or each other.
Is this how you do it?

Your growing season is way ahead of mind here in SD. But my peas finally went in the ground last weekend. I used tie hangers!
