Urban Potato Harvest

I got a free compost delivery this spring that was so much more than I really needed I built a hill for potatoes for the first time ever. It’s about 15 feet long, planted with spuds from the grocery store that were sprouting in our pantry.
Well, now you can see the result. These are still closer to baby potatoes than full grown. But the heat this year has been tough on the plants. Potatoes actually do very well in cooler climes. So I decided to harvest. Having a hill is fun, because you can move the soil out of the way from the side and see the potatoes growing before you actually harvest them. (Just replace the soil and let them continue growing.)
And, yes, they’ve been growing entirely in compost. We don’t really eat starchy foods any more, but I might make an exception for these little spuds. Baby potatoes contain less starch, and we’ve defrosted a favorite meatloaf for dinner.
Ain’t it grand to be eating out the garden again?

I too am harvesting my potatoes. And yes, it is great to eat out of your own garden once again.
Ever think about what all the talking is about in the school lunch issue? I wonder what the children think we are saying. Here’s my take on what they are thinking.
