Another Fawn Sighting

Having babies on pasture can be dangerous
For those of you concerned about the well being of the baby deer I recently discovered in one of our pastures, I can report this morning that the fawn is alive and well. It’s gotten bigger, which tells me that the fawn re-united with its mother and is feeding.
While scything milkweed this morning I almost stepped on the fawn. It sprang from where it had been lying in the tall grass and trotted away. I also discovered where the fawn and its mother had spent the night–an area where the grass had been flattened in a broad circle.
That marks the second time I nearly speared the fawn with my scythe. Apparently collisions of this sort are not uncommon in farm country, with tragic results for the deer. When I shared my story with locals at a pancake breakfast over the weekend, they nodded in recognition, recalling the times they had run over baby deer in their fields with mowers and other heavy equipment.
Since we now have an electric perimeter fence surrounding our property, I’m guessing this particular fawn is going to be with us for some time. At least until its big enough to jump the fence.
