Like Our New Look?

Finally, it’s here: a site design to go with our move to the farm. All credit goes to my wife, Lane, and our web designers, Keri Marion and Justin Lewis. They’ve been working on this for months.
The front page has been streamlined with a bigger window for text and photos. I’m no longer roaming the country reporting on school food, but we’ve left a portal to access those stories. To find previous articles, check the archives feature and scroll through posts by month. The recipes feature at the top of the page is great: all of the recipes posted here appear in alphabetical order. You can also find specific recipes or ingredients using the search option.
Under “videos,” you’ll find the clips I made with the MonkeySee group on how to compost and how to start a vegetable garden.
And of course you can still subscribe to the daily edition of The Slow Cook and follow us on Twitter and on Facebook.
You may be wondering where we came up with the name, “Spy Dog Farm.” Well, there’s a back-story. We used to own a great, yellow Labrador retriever named Max. Actually, his full name was Maxwell von Smart. He had an older female buddy named Rusty, who was a little too smart for her own good and got herself run over by a farm vehicle. We went to the pound looking for another female to replace Rusty and found a spaniel mix the same color. Attempting to name the new dog, my wife asked a friend what goes with Max: “Agent 99” was the instant reply, a reference to the old television series Get Smart, featuring a comically inclined secret agent duo.
Until they died, Max and Agent 99 were our dogs. So when it came time to name our new farm here in Upstate New York, my daughter didn’t hesitate. “Spy Dog Farm!” she declared. And so it is.

Hi Ed and company, I so enjoy your posts. I have subscribed for quite a while now, and have followed your journey from your garden in DC to Spy Dog Farm. I look forward to each one. Please keep it up. They are entertaining and educational. Who could ask for more?

Silly me, I hadn’t made the connection between Spy Dog, Max and 99. I am so pleased that their memories are such an important part of the new digs. Can’t you see them begging to be let out to chase the sheep?
