Chickens Will Eat Anything

My wife came home the other day with a gorgeous collection of gourds to mark the Halloween season. She arranged them decoratively on the front porch and our laying hens promptly began to make a meal out of them.
Really? Is there anything chickens won’t peck at?
Here you see them attacking the pumpkin from every possible angle. Eventually, we had to move the gourds to a higher perch where the chickens couldn’t get at them.
But then they started to peck at the house. That’s right, they discovered that behind the stucco around the foundation is a layer of Styrofoam insulation. They pecked right through the stucco to get at the Styrofoam. We laid fireplace logs against the exposed stucco to stop the pecking, but the chickens just moved to another vulnerable spot. Either we’ll have to devise some kind of fencing to keep the hens away, or they’ll have to be moved to another part of the property where they won’t cause any trouble.
We love our Rhode Island Reds, but they can be a nuisance sometimes.
