Chickens Love Pumpkin Carving

We tried moving our pumpkin to higher ground on the front porch and surrounded it with obstacles to keep the hens away but the chickens were not deterred. In fact, they were relentless. There’s something about a pumpkin chickens cannot resist.
Yesterday I finally relented and moved the pumpkin–what was left of it–out into the yard. As you can see, the chickens quickly surrounded it and had a feast. Who knew they were so adept at pumpkin carving?
Oh, well. At least this helps hold down the feed costs. We’ll just have to figure out another way to decorate for Halloween.

Yup. Resign yourself to non edible decorations unless they’re in a cage or the house where the chickens and other stock can’t get to them.
And 1GardenAngel is right on about the Christmas trees. Not only are the trees good for them, but once the animals strip the trees you can use the skeletons as a trellis for things like peas. You can lay the skeleton on its side or stand it up and tie it to a post. Then once the peas are spent you can cut the stalks, untie the skeleton and toss the whole thing in with your stock, they’ll clean the skeleton and you can set it back up for the next round or peas.
