Eating for the Fuel Fund

We were back at the Presbyterian church in Salem for dinner last night to benefit the fund that helps folks pay their winter heating bills. This time there were lots of local products on display in the buffet line: beef, pork, turkey and lamb from 3-Corner Field Farm, where we got our sheep.
The event was advertised as 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., but locals know to get there when the doors open. We arrived at a little past 5:30 and the hall was already full, with nearly every seat taken and a line of would-be diners waiting to get to the buffet for their $12 meal.
“We had three different lasagnas, but they’re all gone already,” said one of the servers. We settled for baked ziti. The dessert table–with lots of home-made pies–also had been wiped out, except for boxes of ghoulish cup cakes left over from Halloween.
Volunteers had spent many hours preparing the food, but my wife was not especially impressed with the end result.
“Next time,” she said, “let’s just donate money to the cause and skip the dinner.”
Aw, but where’s the fun in that?
