Tree Up a Tree

Long before we arrived on the scene, a tall American cherry tree, about 12 inches in diameter, broke off near the ground and fell into the arms of a big oak in the hedgerow behind our orchard. There the cherry tree stayed at a crazy angle, season after season. When the wind blew, the two trunks rubbed together and made the most fascinating whale sounds.
How to deal with such star-crossed trees? We called our friend David, who brought his 50-horsepower John Deere tractor and a length of chain. As you can see in the video above, it was really no trick separating the cherry from the oak. Numerous vines clinging to the trunk eased its fall to the ground. Within a few minutes, the cherry had been cut up into lengths suitable for our wood stove.
There’s no end of cleanup work on a farm.
