Here’s another sign we’re not in D.C. any more: snow tires. And not just any snow tires. These have metal studs.

We had our driveway plowed after the big snow storm passed through here a week ago. Eventually, parts of the driveway were practically ice, and being on a steep incline in spots there was no way to get up and down with the usual treads. In fact, our electrician showed up in his van to install some wiring in one of the outbuildings and couldn’t finish the job because his van didn’t make it up the hill.

We figured we needed at least one vehicle that wouldn’t leave us stranded in the house. So we switched out all four tires on the pickup truck for treads with bite. Combined with four-wheel drive, we should be able to go just about anywhere. But wouldn’t you know it: No sooner had the studded tires been installed than a warm front moved through. All the snow and ice on the driveway has melted and turned to mud. The roads are clear.

Oh, well. I guess we’ll just have to hope for another snow storm.

Total cost for tires, mounting and balancing was around $600. That’s the price you pay for living in the country. And we’ll need to switch back to our regular tires in the spring….

The Granville Area Chorus holds its traditional Christmas concert this afternoon featuring part of Handel’s Messiah and a new cantata–Bethlehem’s Child. The free concert is held at the Granville Congregational Church, with a reception to follow. Donations are gladly accepted.

Hubbard Hall in Cambridge presents the musical trio The Whippersnappers on Saturday, Dec. 28. They will join a community dance at 4 p.m., to be followed by a potluck dinner at 6. They perform again at 8 p.m. Cost for general admission is $25.

Finally, you may not have noticed, but the days began getting longer yesterday with the winter solstice. We are certainly glad for that. Now we just have to hope our wood pile holds out for the rest of the heating season.

Happy Holidays!
