Finally, it was starting to feel like spring around here. Temperatures had climbed into the 40s. Snow was melting. Birds were singing. We were sloshing around in pools of water and mud when all of a sudden another one of those winter nor’easters showed up. It was, as Yogi Berra would say, deja vu all over again. First rain, then sleet, then snow, then winds gusting 50 mph. Overnight Wednesday we were plunged into an instant freeze. Everything was coated in ice, then snow. This morning, it’s barely above zero.

A side view of our truck gives some idea what we’re dealing with. We wanted to make a run into town for groceries. First, daughter had to spend some time with a hair dryer melting the ice off the windows and side mirrors. The chickens have been stuck inside their little coop. What a mess, but they soldier on. We’re still collecting gobs of eggs.

I was thinking ahead and had hauled extra hay to the pen inside the walk-in shelter where the boy goat had been staying. The animals got fed right on schedule, but we’re still hauling buckets of water from the kitchen because the outdoor hydrant is still frozen. We’ve tried to make the most of it staying inside. I’m working on taxes. My wife continues to make improvements to the house. Daughter had the day off from school: she made melted crayon art and emptied the kitty litter.

Dinner was Sweedish meet balls in brown sauce and cheddar-cheese cauliflower casserole. And guess what? We didn’t lose power.

The girl goats, meanwhile, spend most of the time in their shed looking out. I think they’ve had enough of this winter. Have you?
