Just when we thought we had all the fences patched, somebody starts making unscheduled visits to the orchard.
Since July, the orchard has been reserved for our two rams, awaiting breeding season. But for some reason, the other animals can’t resist trying to break into the orchard. What could be the attraction?
So it was that twice this week we found our beef calf where he shouldn’t be amongst the fruit trees. Mostly what he seemed to want to do was butt heads with the rams. Otherwise he just wandered around, nibbling on grass and looking for his mother, who of course has no interest in following him into the orchard.
Soon enough, the calf is bellowing because he is hungry and wants to nurse. Into the orchard we must go to show him the way out.
Today’s project will be to find that break in the orchard fence and fix it more permanently.
