End of Summer?

After a December that shattered all records for heat in Upstate New York–by a lot–we finally got a couple of inches of snow to greet the new year. But it quickly turned to a slushy, icy mess that did little to improve the landscape and just made navigating our driveway that much more treacherous.
The animals are confused. I opened the walk-in shelter to them when the snow began to fly. But are they supposed to hang out there and just eat the hay I provide them, or do they return to the pastures to try and make a meal on the hoof?
I turned our Jersey cow Emily loose in the back yard. The broiler chickens travel quite extensively here in the warmer months, leaving a thick trail of fertilizer. You might be able to see how much greener the grass is than in the dun-colored pastured that have been ceaselessly grazed since last May.
Emily noshes happily, and we are happy to have her mowing outside the living room windows. Watching her graze is so much easier than hauling hay.
It’s been a terrible season for winter sports. But I have a feeling the greenery will disappear soon enough. Winter must settle in sooner or later. Or will it?
