Composting somewhere in India

Composting somewhere in India

Recently I received an e-mail from a graduate student in India who had viewed the composting videos I made for Monkeysee (click on “video” above) and wanted more information on how to compost in rural areas. This is what he wrote:
“Hey Bruske,
I saw your videos on monkeysee and believe me they helped a lot..but i still had some more queries regarding composting..before asking them..let me introduce myself..i am Shyam Daga from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. INDIA. i am a student doing my post graduation in Business Entrepreneurship..
i am working on a project with the Government Of India on composting in rural areas of our country..what i wanted to know was..
  •  can Human, Kitchen, Garden, Agricultural and all other types pf bio degradable material like paper and wood be put in the same heap to get composted..if yes, what quantity and how much time would be required..could i find detail study regarding the same anywhere on the Internet or could you help me with the same…
  • I am confused about the methane gas coming out of such composting heaps. can u please enlighten me with the same please…
  • since ewe are talking about composting on village levels we expect the quantity to be in tonnes per day.. we anted to conduct the activity with the least amount of infrastructure put up..so we intend to follow the most natural method for the same which has been shown in your videos..can you help me with some bacterial chemicals like the BIOCULUM which help speeden the process…
  • the final question that i had was that are there different types of compost which have varied applications or any kind of compost can be used for agricultural and gardening functions…
i hope i am not causing you a lot of trouble and the above questions are form you array of study…
waiting for your reply…
thanking you…

I replied to Shyam that I really am not the person to be talking to about large-scale composting and directed him to the municipal composting program in San Francisco. But I was impressed that something I had filmed in my yard right here in the District of Columbia had traveled all the way to the other side of world and was influencing someone there.
But in case you thought they are just learning about composting in India, that would not be the case. They’ve been experts at it for thousands of years. I don’t think I have anything to teach them. But if you have better answers to Shayam’s questions, please send me a line and I’ll hook you up.

I love it, Ed. Good job. As for those of us just over the river, your blog and video has resulted in one compost bin full of beautiful black soil (from last year) and well on our way to finishing up a second. Between composting and Arlington’s new, expanded recycling policy, what we throw away as “trash” is probably only 25% of what we consume. And we’re working on that too.

    Keep up the good work!
