Degustation of local honey apple wine
One brother-in-law flew back to Chicago Saturday and another arrived yesterday from Washington, D.C. Tom, my sister Linda’s husband, is the head librarian and gardener-in-chief at a private school outside Washington. He recently was designated beekeeper at the school as well. Where gardening is concerned, he really knows his stuff. He’s here for a week or more to get some kind of vegetable garden started where only tall grass currently is growing.
But after an 8-hour drive from D.C., Tom was thirsty. So was I. What we needed was some kind of cocktail to celebrate his arrival, so we climbed back in his car and drove 20 minutes to Amorici Vineyards in Valley Falls. You might recall me posting about Amorici in the lead-up to Cambridge’s balloon festival. For $5 you get to sample five of their wines and keep the wine glass. Turns out Tom, a world-class oenophile, was most taken with Amorici’s apple honey wine. Who knew? It is delicious, and hits the spot when the weather suddenly turns oppressively hot and muggy, as it was yesterday.
Tom is headed for a school garden confab in California in July where he will be pitching his own tent for shelter. So last night he found a spot high on the back pasture to try out his camping gear. Before he could climb into his sleeping bag, a vicious thunderstorm swept through. Later we experienced a light rain for an hour. Or so Tom tells me. I was fast asleep. I woke up early and was out scything paths for sheep fencing when Tom appeared with his dog Eady and shouted, “Good morning!”
It was barely 6 a.m. Now we are off to The Burger Den for a hearty breakfast.
