Queen of the Hill

There’s no shortage of rocks on our farm property. In fact, there are piles of them scattered all around. I guess it was to difficult to actually get rid of the rocks, so previous owners just piled them up wherever it was convenient.
We thought a rock pile would make a nice feature for our goat enclosure. We don’t expect to keep the goats there permanently. But the couple we bought the place from had already built a goat shed. All we needed to do was add some temporary fencing. And we made sure to include that pile of rocks. That’s what goats do, right? Climb on things?
At first the goats just ignored the rocks. I think they were preoccupied with eating hay and I wasn’t giving them any. So they just skulked around the paddock nibbling grass and occasionally bawling their heads off. But over time, they’ve started acting more and more like goats, which means eating all manner of weeds and brambles. Eventually they got around to feasting on the tall weeds surrounding the rock pile, and that’s when they discovered it was actually fun climbing there.
Here you can see the baby goat–Tanner–perched on top of the pile while momma Dolley looks on. This shot was taken a couple of weeks ago. Now, all of these weeds are gone and Tanner just hops around on the rocks for fun.
I love it when animals do what they were designed to do without any interference from me.
