Our daughter watched me mowing a paddock previously grazed by our sheep and asked if she could take a spin on the tractor. We thought, Why not? My wife and I both learned how to drive on a rider mower.

We’re using the John Deere mower loaned to us by a neighbor. I showed daughter the basics–how to get it started, forward, reverse. She did so well tooling around on it I decided to take the next step–cutting grass. She learned how to turn the mower on and off. One nice thing about this tractor, when you lift yourself off the seat the engine cuts off automatically. Nice safety feature that.

Soon enough my wife and I were sitting on the porch enjoying a cool beverage as daughter finished mowing the paddock. She was determined not to screw this up. Just look at the serious expression on her face.

Does this mean we have a new farm hand?
