Here’s something new and different: instead of money draining out of the bank account to pay for our farm, we actually have some trickling in.
Last Friday we processed another 27 chicken broilers and when I added up all the totals, we had sold more than $950 worth in the last two weeks. Word is out about our Freedom Rangers: friends and clients from last year are referring new customers. One person picked up 10 on Saturday, another customer five. Yesterday one woman drove out from Saratoga–that’s 24 miles–just to purchase one four-pound bird.
We had a lot of roosters in this batch of Rangers and they got really big. Average size for the 27 birds we slaughtered on Friday was just under six pounds. At $3.50 a pound, that adds up quickly.
Of course, half the money we’ve made has already been spent on the non-GMO chicken feed we purchase from a local farm family. But we can make several tractor payments with what we now have in the bank, plus feed, plus a new batch of chickens.
What does that make my hourly wage for all the work that went into growing those chickens? I don’t even want to think about it.
Way to go!!! Those birds look delicious and the non-GMO feed is worth the extra money, in my opinion. I have to say, reading your blog reminds me of that old TV show “Green Acres.” Not in a bad way at all…I just really enjoy reading about the adjustments and learning experiences of starting your own farm and tragi-comedy events that are inevitable for anyone living the farm life. I loved that show BTW 😀
Tammy, I’m wondering if all farmers sit down to a Pimm’s cup after a hard day slaughtering chickens.
