Organizing Firewood

We ordered two cords of firewood from our supplier in Vermont. Along with the wood left over from last year and the timber we felled and split on the property, we have something like four and a half cords on hand.
That should be plenty to get us through the long, cold winter here in Upstate New York. But we’re not home free yet. Not by a long shot. Our wood stove is efficient but on the small side, meaning we have to light a new fire every morning. That means we need smaller logs and kindling to get the fire going. So we sort through all our firewood, stacking the big pieces on pallets next to the house, the smaller pieces closer to the stove and the kindling in a big pile–nice and dry–in the basement.
That’s my next project: splitting kindling. Time to sharpen the hatchet.
