I spent a few days in D.C. Last week. The writing program at George Washington University had invited me relive my school food reporting under the heading, “Is Real Food Only for the Rich?” Indeed, the battle over this nation’s largest feeding program goes on–but without me tagging along.
Hard to believe it had been a year since I’d seen old friends. We picked up pretty much where we left off: trying to select from a million restaurant choices for the evening’s entertainment. Such a contrast to our sleepy, new life here in Upstate New York where the village has to turn away new business because the ancient water lines can’t handle modern fire suppression requirements and a central sewage treatment system is still lacking.
Yet, after landing in Albany, we raced off to Hoosick Falls to celebrate the opening of a new brewery. Then it was back to farm chores. The goats had thoroughly grazed the chicken enclosure. I installed some fencing in the orchard and we led them there.
The days grow shorter, but as long as we can still push fence posts into the ground, we’ll continue to rotate the animals around the property. One day follows the next….
