Makin’ Feed
October 28th, 2014 · No Comments · Posted in farming
We raise our animals on grass. Still, this time of year we go through a lot of feed, mostly to sustain our Freedom Ranger broiler chickens. We’ve also added to our flock of laying hens–another investment in feed.
It all adds up to almost weekly visits to a local farm family for 100 pound bags of feed mix. The Elsworths in nearby Easton blend their own corn, soy and oats, adding calcium and other nutrients as needed to make a variety of feeds for chickens, pigs, goats, cattle. It’s not organic, but the Elsworth have chosen natural seed, not the genetically modified (GMO) variety.
This time of year, farmers in our part of the world are harvesting their grains like crazy. The Elsworths have all the machinery they need to mill and bag those grains into feed.
I’m happy to pay a bit extra to get my feed from the Elsworths.
