Hay, Goats!

After the latest weather reduced the remnants of our hay tarp to absolute tatters, I spent part of the day moving the small stack of hay it was covering inside the shelter in the main paddock.

As you can see, the goats were having a ball with the hay. In addition to climbing all over it, dashing this way and that, they used it as a launching pad to jump into the milking parlor, where they made a mess of the hay in there as well.

This is all part of the daily improvisation I like to call “jazz farming.” Since we don’t really know what we’re doing, and our infrastructure is limited, we just muddle along from day to day, trying one thing or another as needs arise.

This hay had already gotten a bit wet, which usually spells spoiled hay. I had hoped to salvage some of it for winter, since the current price is around $6 a bale.

The goats, who love to play with anything they can climb on, may have other ideas. Maybe they’ll just eat it.
