We were picking raspberries like mad this weekend at Gardenworks outside Salem. This is another gem in southern Washington County–a third-generation farm and garden center where you can pick your own fruit and berries. If Martha Stewart had a garden center, it would look like Garden Works. Incredibly well-appointed, they have a terrific selection of cheese and local foods. They make pies and impeccable cider donuts. It’s worth a trip to see the Christmas display. And periodically they put on a huge feast featuring local ingredients.
And it’s just up the road from the ice cream at Battenkill Creamery….
A variety of law enforcement agencies were out in force recently confiscating marijuana plants. We wondered why there was a helicopter hovering over our stretch of road. Authorities said they seized and destroyed “several thousand” marijuana plants.
Meanwhile, five youths were arrested for under-age drinking at the Schaghticoke fair.
Congratulations to Miss Olivia’s students from the British School of Ballet in Hoosick Falls on their dance recital for residents of the Center for Nursing and rehabilitation. Dance numbers covered classical ballet, lyrical, Irish step dance, tap and gymnastics.
Some three dozen boats were expected for the Waterford Tugboat Roundup this weekend. Boats will be open for tours, along with music and food, celebrating the area’s canal history. Go to www.tugboatroundup.com for more information.
Stewart’s Shops has been named purveyor of the best milk in New York State for the second year running. The stores, famous for their ice cream as well, won the award from Cornell University’s Department of Science. Stewart’s milk, which earned only the fourth perfect score ever given, is produced by dairies in Saratoga, Rensselaer and Washington Counties. “From our local farms to our own dairy, everyone strives to provide our customers fresh, high quality milk that we can now say is the best in the state,” said Stewart’s President Gary Dake.
Cambridge Boy Scout Troop 62 is calling all boys aged 11-17 to join. Fall meetings start September 25 at Cambridge First Baptist Church.
Cambridge Youth Football will hold a fundraising chicken barbecue Sunday, September 15, from noon to 3 p.m. in the Cambridge Central School Parking Lot. There will be baked potatoes, cole slaw, baked beans and a bread roll to go with the chicken, and the Cambridge Youth Cheerleaders will be selling baked goods for dessert.
The Voice of a Vet group is looking for World War II veterans to participate in an event at the Hoosick Falls Alliance Church October 26. Veterans who are still living will be presented with the New York State Senate Liberty Medal and Certificate for their time of service. Calling all chowder makers for the Hoosick Falls chowder cook-off! Clam chowder, fish chowder, corn chowder, potato chowder, ham chowder, vegetable chowder. Savory chowders, dessert chowders, appetizer chowders. All are eligible during the Pumpkinpalooza 5 events September 21. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded for crowd favorites. Finally, Rensselaer County Dairy Princess says kids on a busy schedule still need their three servings of dairy every day. This week she lists her “top five” dairy snacks. “Each one is easy, healthy, quick, and most importantly absolutely delicious.”
Included is a smoothie made with “any kind of fruit” and vanilla yogurt. Second is strawberry popsicles, made by mixing strawberry milk and fresh strawberry slices. Third, cheese kabobs with alternating apple slices and any kind of cheese on skewers. Fourth, a “chocolate raspberry chugger” made by combining raspberries, milk and cocoa powder in a blender. Finally, string cheese. “What kid doesn’t find it entertaining to pull apart string cheese?”
